In 2010 WALA lent support to the campaign to save the horse chestnut. For over a decade now, the Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner (Cameraria ohridella) has been spreading through Europe. It causes the leaves of the white-flowering horse chestnut to turn brown and fall prematurely. In Germany almost every one of these magnificent trees is affected. Currently, the only effective way to reduce the extent of infestation is to collect and burn the fallen leaves.
The Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald e.V. has therefore started a campaign to gather up the fallen leaves. The first event in the campaign was held on 28 October 2010 in Bad Boll and was organized by the highly respected woodland conservation project WaldMobil.
Third- and fourth-year school pupils can make an active contribution to nature conservation by taking part in the annual leaf-collecting activities in October and November.
