From Eckwälden to the rest of the world: Shipping
The filled and labelled preparations are stored in boxes made of recyclable material before being shipped within Germany or to one of some 40 export countries. Empty storage boxes are not disposed of but are largely re-used, for instance when shipping goods to customers.
When preparing products for shipment, we try to select packaging that is exactly the right size for the order. This conserves packaging material and reduces transport volumes. A computer program helps us to calculate the ideal size. For shipping cosmetics within Germany, we primarily rely on re-usable packaging from the postal system. The package is padded with layers of recycling paper or inflated balloons – an idea which originated from one of our employees. This shipping system is very well received by our customers.
To reduce the traffic involved in shipping, the various shipping companies pick up packages at WALA only once a day, which means that we pack the goods for shipment during the day and send them in the evening. Our quality requirements specify that palettes of goods may not be stacked during transport. As a result, we only use freight vehicles that can be loaded on two levels. Within Germany, we work with shipping companies that minimise emissions from their vehicles, for instance with engines that are particularly fuel-efficient or run on natural gas.
Since completion of the expansion building at Dorfstrasse 1, goods receiving, logistics and a large share of production are situated at the entrance to the village. This has allowed us to significantly reduce both internal traffic between WALA buildings (located at different ends of the village) and the frequency of heavy-load deliveries of packaging supplies and raw materials.
