History of WALA

WALA Heilmittel GmbH is a company whose philosophy is based on the anthroposophic teachings of Dr. Rudolf Steiner. In 1929, Dr. med. Ita Wegman and Dr. Rudolf Hauschka began working at the Clinical and Therapeutic Institute in Arlesheim, Switzerland. Their research focused on the production of medicines of plant, animal and mineral origins. From the very beginning, the two researchers modelled their rhythmically-based manufacture procedures on the rhythmically pulsating polarities found in nature, such as day and night, hot and cold, motion and stillness.

Compelling results led to the establishment of the first WALA laboratory in Ludwigsburg, Germany in 1935. The laboratory relocated to Dresden in 1938 but was shut down by the Nazi regime in 1941. A new WALA Heilmittel laboratory was founded five years later, on the grounds of the Homeopathic Hospital in Munich. The laboratory moved to Bad Boll/Eckwälden near Stuttgart in 1950. Dr. Rudolf Hauschka, Dr. Margarethe Hauschka-Stavenhagen, Max Kaphahn and Maja Mewes founded WALA OHG there in 1953. WALA employees today continue to produce herbal extracts in Eckwälden according to the same rhythmic methods.

The name WALA is derived from the German phrase for the basis of the rhythmic processes, the warmth-ashes-light-ashes procedure. WALA’s undertakings are founded in rhythmic manufacturing processes combined with medical knowledge enhanced by the world view of anthroposophy.

In 1979, WALA OHG was split into a marketing and production company, WALA Heilmittel GmbH, and a holding company in the form of an unlimited company. In 1986 Karl Kossmann and Dr. med. Heinz-Hartmut Vogel, the sole partners at the time, transferred the company’s assets to the WALA Foundation as the successor to the OHG and to the not-for-profit Dr.Hauschka Foundation.

Today more than 700 people are employed at WALA Heilmittel GmbH. They are distributed throughout five company buildings in two locations in Bad Boll/Eckwälden (see diagram on the inside front cover), including some 530 employees at Location 1 (Dorfstrasse 1 and 3, Badstrasse 62) and 230 employees at Location 2 (Bosslerweg 2 and Rossauchtert 2).

The building at Dorfstrasse 1 houses a large share of the manufacturing facilities in addition to the warehouse, shipping, administration and development departments. Dorfstrasse 3 is the location of the analytical control laboratory, where all incoming ingredients and finished WALA preparations undergo microbiological examination, purity and identity tests via thin-layer chromatography or quantitative analysis for instance using HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography). The pharmaceutical scientific department, clinical research, medicinal registration and accounting/finance are all located at Badstrasse 62. Certain divisions of manufacturing, marketing and sales are located at Bosslerweg 2. WALA’s own medicinal herb garden is located behind this building, lovingly tended to in accordance with biodynamic principles and in compliance with Demeter standards. Occupational training and continuing education for Dr.Hauschka Natural Estheticians takes place in the building at Rossauchtert 2, converted specifically for this purpose.

WALA Heilmittel develops, manufactures and distributes anthroposophic homeopathic remedies (WALA Medicines), natural cosmetics (Dr.Hauschka Skin Care) and natural special care products crafted to meet specific needs (Dr.Hauschka Med). The popularity of our products is constantly increasing around the globe and we have experienced steady growth in turnover in the past years.

WALA medicines are distributed via pharmacies. Dr.Hauschka Skin Care and Dr.Hauschka Med products are available from authorised distributors, including natural and health food stores, natural beauty shops, department stores, perfume stores, pharmacies and Dr.Hauschka Natural Estheticians.
