Environmental goals, 2005 to 2008

	Process-oriented environmental audit of equipment and machinery	Environmental Engineering	Ongoing	Assessing the data logged via the building control system allows ongoing environmental control, the prevention of increased consumption through error warnings and the identification of additional potentials for optimisation.
	Optimisation of the ventilation systems	Technical Services	Ongoing	The newly deployed ventilation system is more efficient and thus uses less energy.
	Optimisation of cooling	Technical Services	12/2006	The efficiency of cold generation was also improved with a new chiller. By installing it directly where it is used, we were able to minimise transfer losses.
Reduction of the water environmental index by 3% annually (relative to turnover)	Optimisation of cleaning processes	Manufacturing	Ongoing	A range of individual measures, including the transition to and expansion of more specific cleaning programs, made it possible to decrease the consumption of both fresh water and cleaning agents per cleaning of the manufacturing containers and equipment.
	Process-oriented environmental audits of equipment and machinery	Environmental Engineering	Ongoing	By installing a new dosing system, we succeeded in decreasing the amount of cleaning agents used in the manufacturing equipment.
	Reduction of water consumption at hand washbasins through the use of modern aerators	Technical Services	12/2005	All hand washbasins have been equipped with flow-restricting aerators.
Reduction of the natural gas environmental index by 3% annually (relative to turnover)	Implementation of a new high-efficiency steam boiler at Dorfstrasse 1	Technical Services	12/2005	We installed a new high-efficiency steam boiler including a heat recovery system.
	Process-oriented environmental audits of equipment and machinery	Technical Services	Ongoing	It is planned to transition various manufacturing processes from natural gas operation to other energy sources.
	Replacement of windows at Bosslerweg with more energy efficient ones	Technical Services	06/2008	A majority of the windows at Bosslerweg have already been replaced by windows with better insulation characteristics. The remaining windows are being successively replaced as remodelling continues.
Reduction of emissions	Acquisition of a natural gas vehicle for delivering internal post, once legal and economic issues have been clarified Fragen	Management	12/2007	Because there is no natural gas filling station in the vicinity of WALA, it does not make ecological sense to acquire a natural gas vehicle for internal post delivery at this time. But we must still examine our fleet of vehicles for additional potentials to reduce emissions.
Identification of potentials for improvement	Expansion of energy and water monitoring at Dorfstrasse 1	Environmental Engineering	12/2005	The expansion of the building control system has made monitoring consumption of energy and water considerably easier. This expansion will continue on an ongoing basis in the future.
	Evaluation of results and implementation, taking economic aspects into consideration	Environmental Engineering	06/2008	This group analyses the detailed consumption data, discusses potential causes and decides on solution approaches. A number of potential areas of improvement have already been identified and concrete measures implemented as a result.
Reduction of the environmental impact of packaging materials	Ongoing monitoring of packaging in terms of environmental effects	Packaging engineer	Ongoing	In co-operation with the Environmental Officer, the environmental relevance of packaging is examined.
	Implementation of justifiable measures	Marketing	Ongoing	Environmental aspects and the impact on the environment are taken into consideration when selecting packaging and the materials used for it. At the same time, packaging must provide adequate protection for our products. We are often forced to make tradeoffs between these two issues.
Reduction of indirect environmental impact	Use of recycled paper for copies, invoices and delivery notes	Marketing	08/2005	WALA business papers, copy paper, invoices and delivery notes have been transitioned to recycled paper.
Promotion of organic farming	Increase in the share of organic foods in the WALA cafeteria to 100%	Administration	12/2006	The share of organic foods in meals at the WALA cafeteria has been increased to 75%. We decided to give preference to regional products and to not additionally increase the share of organic food, in favour of minimising transport distances for the benefit of the environment.
	Sale of textiles from 100% certified organic cotton	Marketing	01/2005	All textiles sold under the brand of Dr.Hauschka Skin Care, including smocks for cosmeticians, hand towels, bathrobes and t-shirts, are made of 100% certified organic cotton.
Cut flowers from sources that conserve resources and are labour-friendly (FLP label, Panda Flowers, etc.)	Purchase of cut flowers produced in an environmentally friendly, sustainable and socially aware manner	Household services	05/2005	We purchase our cut flowers from local florists whose products are either grown in the region or originate from certifiably traceable sources such as FLP (Flower Label Program) or Panda Flowers.
